Aid & Attendance: Financial Support for Senior Care Needs
At Kingston HealthCare, we deeply respect the service of our nation’s veterans. Across all our communities, we’re committed to helping veterans and their surviving spouses access the financial support they deserve through the VA’s Aid & Attendance program.
What is Aid & Attendance? It’s a valuable, tax-free VA benefit that provides additional monthly income to eligible wartime veterans and spouses, specifically to help with the costs of necessary care. This can include services like assisted living, memory care, or skilled nursing and rehabilitation offered at various Kingston HealthCare communities.
We know VA benefits can feel confusing at times, but you’re not alone. Our teams at Kingston HealthCare are here to help every step of the way. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re happy to assist!
Who Is Eligible?
Eligibility for Aid & Attendance requires the following:
- A minimum of 90 days of active duty service, with at least one day during a wartime period.
- Applicants must be 65 or older or have a qualifying disability.
- Discharge status must not be “dishonorable.”
For surviving spouses, eligibility requires they lived with the veteran at the time of their passing and are unmarried at the time of application. Financial qualifications also take into account liquid assets, such as savings, stocks, and 401(k)s.

Applying for Aid & Attendance Safely & For FREE
Please be very careful about online services or websites claiming to help with VA applications.
Many look official but are not affiliated with the government. They frequently charge unnecessary fees or push you towards paid advisors. Protect yourself and your finances from these misleading offers. We strongly recommend applying in person at your nearest VA office. This is the secure, official, and only free method.
Helpful Documents to Gather
Bringing these items can help make your visit to the VA smooth and as straightforward as possible:
- The veteran’s DD214 (Discharge/Separation papers).
- Marriage Certificate (and veteran’s Death Certificate if applying as a spouse).
- Medical paperwork showing the need for care (assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, etc.).
- Information detailing current income and financial assets.
